Whitegate United v Liverpool Liobians

We were back at it this Saturday and this week it was an away day for Whitegate-their first since September.  A trip over to the Wirral to face Liverpool Liobians.

Just like previous weeks, Whitegate started the game the better side creating chances for Jack Lanceley and Tom Carney in the opening minutes. The deadlock was broken minutes later as Sam Ellwood battled his way through two challenges before slotting the ball past the keeper!
A second goal for the away side quickly followed, this time Carney was able to get in behind the defence and kept his composure to find the top corner to double Whitegate’s lead.

Whitegate were in the ascendancy having attack after attack. Lanceley going close again after a great passing move but his left footed effort went just wide of the far post.  The third goal was a thunderbolt from outside the area from Olli Emmerson to give Whitegate a thoroughly deserved 3-0 lead.

Liverpool Liobians pulled a goal back themselves just before the half from the penalty spot after Lewis Williams fouled Liobians winger in the area. Sending the teams in at the break with Whitegate leading 3-1

The second half was a cagey affair with neither side being able to create any clear cut chances. It took until the 70th minute for a chance and it went to the home side who reduced the deficit to one.

Whitegate hit back instantly with Olli Emmerson grabbing his second of the game squeezing his effort underneath the keeper.

Liobians didn’t give up and as the weather took a turn for the worse the game turned in favour of the home side who grabbed their third after a ball over the top of the defence caused mayhem at the back and the ball rolled into the corner of the goal. The comeback was complete in the final minute as an offside call went the way of the attacking team who didn’t hesitate and levelled the game at 4-4.

A strong first half performance from Whitegate  gave them a deserved 3-0 lead but mistakes in defence let the home side back into the game to grab a draw.
