Whitegate United v Crewe Town
After last week’s game against Halton we were back in action last night as Crewe Town made the trip to Whitegate.
The hosts got off to the perfect start inside the opening 10 minutes. A cross from Joe Corbin found Kev Beresford at the back post , Beresford drew the foul inside the area giving Ben Duffy the chance to open the scoring from the spot.
Of course it was never in doubt! Duffy dispatched the penalty leaving the goalkeeper routed to the spot. The lead didn’t last long, an in-swinging corner came off the back of a Whitegate man and into the back of the net.
Crewe completed the turnaround minutes later. A ball to the back post wasn’t dealt with and landed at the feet of Crewe’s winger. He saw his first effort saved before being first to react to put away the rebound.
Whitegate went close to equalising through Sam Eves at the back post but his headed effort went just wide. Minutes later Corbin saw his shot well saved by Crewe’s keeper.
The hosts were left to rue the missed opportunities just before the half. A long ball downfield put Crewe’s striker in on goal and he made no mistake extending the lead.
At the break Whitegate had it all to do and they went close on the hour mark to reducing the deficit. Craig Nicholson was inches away from latched onto Eves’s cross.
Substitute Nicholson was involved again. A goal kick was flicked on by Eves putting the striker away. This time United saw the ball come back off the post.
It was third time lucky for Nicholson. He latched onto a through ball and this time he found the back of the net. As Whitegate pushed for an equaliser they left themselves vulnerable on the counterattack.
The visitors managed to extend their lead in the final minutes after what looked a certain offside allowed the Crewe man to find a teammate in the middle who handed his side a 4-2 victory.
Another good run out for Whitegate but a game of missed opportunities saw Gary Yeo’s side fall to defeat.
