WHITEGATE united v crewe corinthians

For the final game in 2020 Whitegate returned home to face Crewe Corinthians. The two sides had met earlier on in the season with Crewe coming away with a 7-4 victory.

1 minute is all it took until the opening goal of the game and that went to the home side. A free kick found Jack Lanceley in the area who was able to swivel and chip the keeper to give Whitegate an excellent start.

One thing is almost certain in Whitegate games and that is goals and plenty of them! The second goal of the game was an equaliser with Crewe’s winger finishing from close range.

Crewe took the lead on the half hour mark with a shot from just inside the box finding the corner!

Whitegate had chances of their own with Tom Carney going close with a header but was unable to find the target.
The teams went into half time with Crewe leading 2-1 at the break.

Whitegate almost equalised in the opening minute with Carney finding Lewis Williams with a through ball but his left footed effort went over the bar.

Crewe had chances of their own with the game  becoming end to end. But none clearer than Carney’s chance who found himself one on one with the keeper after taking advantage on a mistake from Crewe’s defence but he couldn’t find the far corner. But it was third time lucky for Carney who levelled the game at 2-2 with a free kick finding the top corner.

4 goals in the game was that going to be it? Of course not! The game swung back in the away sides favour who regained the lead with 20 minutes left.

The lead didn’t last long as a great run by Sam Ellwood was stopped when he was hacked down in the penalty area. This gave Williams the opportunity to step up and level the game, and that’s what he did sending the keeper the wrong way!

Both sides had opportunities of their own in the final 10 minutes but were unable to take their chances. The most notable being for Kev Beresford who was able to turn the defender in his own half and race clear one on one with the keeper. Unfortunately for Beresford and Whitegate, his effort didn’t find the back of the net.

Full time Whitegate 3-3 Crewe. A thoroughly entertaining game from both sides. On another day, Whitegate would of taken the victory but it wasn’t meant to be with a draw being a fair result.

Thanks to all our players who have played throughout this difficult season so far. We wish you all a merry Christmas and a Happy new year! And for those who are playing on Boxing Day see you down at Whitegate bright and early!
